Can I have massage if I am sick?

It is best for you to call and reschedule your appointment if you are sick with a cold or flu. It is important to isolate the illness to keep it from spreading.  If you arrive to the clinic ill, you may be asked to reschedule.

  • Many people believe massage therapy will make them feel better if they are ill. While massage does increase immune system function, it may be too demanding on the system while the body is actively fighting a virus. In fact, getting a massage can make the person feel worse and possibly increase the recovery time from the illness. It is best to stay home and rest.
  • As well, the health and well being of your  massage therapist as well as her other clients and visitors may be impacted.
  • The best time to reap the immune system benefits of massage is through regular massage while you are healthy.
  • Non-contagious illnesses may benefit from massage therapy. It is best to discuss with your doctor both your condition and your interest in receiving massage.
